Bald Eagle Amplification!! (Thu 17 Dec 2009)

Cathy Viverette has been able to successfully amply bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) DNA extracted from decades old feather shafts collected from around nests! This is a particularly difficult procedure, and now that she has it down, she will be able to motor forward with her research project. Very cool indeed!

New Server Hardware. (Tue 15 Dec 2009)

The old servers finally kicked the digital bucket! I suspect that steady service from 2005 is a pretty good track record for hardware, they did a good job. However, in the interim, technology has sure changed a lot!

We are now running on dual quad-core AMD's using Sun X2200 M2 servers. Throw in 16GB or RAM and you get some very nice hardware!

I sure hope that the new overlords for Sun do not screw up the hardware.

Servers Down!!!! (Mon 07 Sep 2009)

After five years of quality service, the dyerlab servers have finally decided that it was time for a major hardware overhaul. The G5 XServes did a great job since I’ve been here at VCU and deserve a nice quiet place to spend the rest of their lives.

As of right now, we are looking at replacing them with some nice offerings from Sun and will tide ourselves over in the interim on a desktop box until the new units arrive.
